LISTENING TO THE KIDS
Join the Ed Factory’s Teachers Institute in Minneapolis for Listening to the Kids, a public conversation that centers young people’s voices, language, and lived experiences as essential sources of knowledge. The event explores how listening—to students’ words, cultural expression, and community realities—reshapes teaching, curriculum, and school–community relationships in ways that challenge deficit thinking and reconnect education to the lives of the children it serves.

David Stovall teaches at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). His research interests include critical race theory, social justice in education, the relationship between housing and education, and the relationship between schools and community stakeholders.
In an effort to bring theory to action, he has spent the last ten years working with community organizations and schools to develop a curriculum that addresses social justice issues. His current work has led him to join the Greater Lawndale/Little Village School of Social Justice High School design team, which opened in the fall of 2005, where he also serves as a volunteer social studies teacher.

Noma LeMoine is a national education consultant to school districts across the country. She is the former director of the Los Angeles Unified School District's Academic English Mastery Program. In that role, she was responsible for the design, development, coordination, and implementation of a program that served over 30,000 students, 2,000 teachers, and 800 paraeducators. The program, which has been featured on 60 Minutes and in periodicals including Education Week and Teacher Magazine, has as its primary goal facilitating mastery of standard American English in English Language Learners, while fostering in them an appreciation for their home language and culture.
