From Ideas Toward More Independent Writing

A small-group, live, online writing studio for 6–10 young people ages 11 and 12.

Across five Saturday sessions, writers will practice generating ideas, organizing their thinking, drafting with intention, revising with care, and learning strategies that help them become more independent and confident writers.

The studio will be led by Ed Factory facilitator Pooja Patel, a licensed reading and learning specialist, SRSD-trained educator, published author, and middle school English teacher.

About the Studio

Young people are often asked to produce finished writing without being given enough time, structure, or guidance to understand how writing develops. The Young Writers Studio will make that process more visible and manageable. Through explicit instruction, guided practice, and caring, individual feedback, writers will work with strategies for:

• Generating and developing ideas

• Organizing their thinking

• Drafting with intention

• Revising with care

• Approaching writing with greater independence and confidence

The studio is designed for young people with varied relationships to writing—not only those who already identify as strong or enthusiastic writers.

About Pooja Patel

Pooja is a licensed reading and learning specialist, SRSD-trained educator, published author, and middle school English teacher at Dwight-Englewood School. Her work brings together close attention to young writers, explicit writing instruction, and the kind of structure that helps students understand what writing asks of them and how they can move through it with greater confidence.

Participant Information & Fellowship Application Form

After registering, we ask a parent or guardian to complete a brief form with the young writer. The information provided will help Pooja understand each writer’s experiences, strengths, and areas in which they would like support.

This is not an application for admission, and the information will not be used to determine whether a young writer may participate.

Use the form to request a fellowship before registering and paying.

Writing Assessment

Every young writer will complete a brief writing assessment before the studio begins. The assessment is not graded and will not be used to determine admission. It will help Pooja prepare individualized, differentiated instruction responsive to each writer’s strengths and needs during sessions.

Assessment instructions will be sent after registration.

Certificate of Completion

Each young writer who attends all five sessions in full and completes the program will receive a certificate of completion. Families may share the certificate with the young writer’s school or include it in individualized home instruction plans and records.

Tuition & Fellowships

Early tuition: $195 through 31 August 2026

Full tuition: $225

Limited full and partial fellowships are available. Families seeking support should complete the Participant Information and Fellowship Application form before registering and paying.

Requesting fellowship support will not affect a young writer’s participation in the studio.
